Xdot Engineering and Analysis offered a short course on Practical Rotordynamics for Real Machinery October 15 through 18 in Charlottesville, VA, with an optional guided hands on training session on October 19th using a trial version of DyRoBeS. The hands on day was suitable for anyone who needed an introduction to DyRoBeS, as well as anyone who simply wanted hands-on experience using some of the concepts discussed during the course.

The short course was targeted at beginning and intermediate rotating equipment engineers with a need to develop a practical understanding of the dynamic behavior and analysis of rotating machinery which their company builds, buys, or maintains. The typical participant would have had a bachelor's degree in engineering and some prior experience with rotating machinery.

This course was team-taught by three experienced consultants who make their living doing rotordynamics. It focused on the practical use of rotordynamic analysis as a tool to:

  • Ensure equipment being purchased does not have clear rotordynamic issues that will lead to unreliable operation (rotordynamic audit), and/or
  • Support development of new machinery with smooth, reliable operation (design), and/or
  • Assist in understanding and resolving field problems with existing machinery (vibration troubleshooting).

We started with the basics, and then went through all of the major elements of a complete analysis, including:

  • Modeling
  • Lateral response and stability
  • Bearing analysis
  • Torsional analysis
  • Overview of API standards
  • Selected case histories and examples

MALCOLM E. LEADER is owner of Applied Machinery Dynamics with more than 35 years of experience in rotordynamics, bearing design, modal testing, vibration control, and analyzing problems in rotating equipment. He has been an independent consultant for 27 years. Malcolm is a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Texas, a member of the Vibration Institute's Board of Directors and an ASME Fellow. He is certified as a Vibration Institute Level IV vibration analyst/consultant, and has BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Virginia.

MARK CORBO is owner of No Bull Engineering. He has more than 25 years of experience in the design and analysis of rotating equipment and hydraulic and pneumatic valves, pumps, and actuators. Mark is a registered professional engineer in New York State, and a member of ASME, STLE, and the Vibration Institute. He serves on the API 684 task force, and the Hydraulic Institute vibrations (dynamics) committee. He has a MS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

ERIK SWANSON is president and Chief Engineer for Xdot Engineering and Analysis with more than 20 years of experience in the area of rotordynamics, bearings and rotating machinery. Erik is a licensed Professional Engineer in North Carolina and Virginia, and a member of ASME, STLE, Sigma Xi, and the Vibration Institute. He serves on the API 684 task force. He has a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Virginia Tech.
