Training and Professional Development Courses

Xdot offers a variety of practical rotordynamics short courses and training tailored to meet your team’s individual needs. Xdot’s training and professional development courses help your team develop an understanding of the rotordynamics in the machines your company builds, buys, or maintains. Xdot’s customized courses range from a half-day to 3 days, and can be conducted virtually or on-site.  In addition to customized courses, we offer an annual four day Rotordynamics course with an additional one day Dyrobes® class.

Xdot training and professional development courses focus on practical use of rotordynamics analysis as a tool to:

  • Ensure equipment being purchased does not have clear rotordynamics issues that will lead to unreliable operation (rotordynamics audit)
  • Support development of new machinery with smooth, reliable operation (design)
  • Assist understanding and resolving field problems with existing machinery (vibration troubleshooting)

Our short courses are targeted at beginning and intermediate rotating equipment engineers who need to develop a practical understanding of the dynamic behavior and analysis of rotating machinery. This could include turbines, compressors, motors, generators, expanders, pumps, fans, etc. Our experience base includes small, high speed 1 to 2 kW machines up to large 1000+ MW turbine generator trains.

Who Should Attend?

The typical participant in Xdot training courses has completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering and has some prior experience with rotating machinery. We also deliver an overview half-day “Rotordynamics for Non-Engineers” course.

What is the Course Curriculum

We keep the discussion concrete, example based, and with an absolute minimum amount of mathematics. If your needs are more technical, we are also able to dive into theory and talk about eigenvalues, finite element solutions of the Reynolds equation, magnetic bearing transfer functions, and more.

  • Hydrodynamic bearing basics and analysis
  • Introduction to rotordynamics of magnetic bearing supported machinery
  • API (American Petroleum Institute) rotordynamics standards (including API 684 and the upcoming API 617 magnetic bearing annex)
